 Disney During COVID

With the holidays fast approaching, many of us that have been cooped up are ready to enjoy some much needed vacation time. Holidays at Disney is one of the most magical times to visit the happiest place on earth. So whether you have reservations or are just thinking about traveling to Disney world, this blog is for you. Having recently returned from a week in Orlando visiting Disney World, I want to share the good and bad of visiting Disney during Covid-19. I’ll also share tips to help make your Disney trip as magical as it can be in these challenging times.

To Disney or not?

Let me first start by telling you our family is definitely biased towards Disney. My wife is just south of a Disney fanatic, and our kids have definitely taken after their mother. I on the other hand enjoy Disney, but only in small doses. Disclosure, our family has been Disney annual passholders for the past four years. In fact we’ve basically created a new family ritual of spending Christmas and New Years in the Disney parks and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. So when we recently decided that we were ready to venture down to Disney, we decided to set a few ground rules before we left.

Temper Your Expectations

We have spent many days enjoying the magic of Disney. Well, things have changed dramatically. Currently, the parks are limited to only 25% capacity. You will be required to wear masks and have your temperature taken before you can enter the parks and there is no park hopping, meaning you can only visit one park per day.

Too crowded??

Also, there are no fast passes.  While you are probably familiar with the need for park tickets, hotel reservations, even dining reservations, did you know you now have to make reservations just to visit a park? Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Disney as part of the reduction in capacity, limited your park visit to one park per day.

Many rides are under construction, some restaurants are closed, and many shows have closed temporarily due to safety issues. There are no parades or fireworks, park hours have been cut, and social distancing is required. If you are a Disney veteran at all,  you know what Disney crowds feel like. At 25% capacity,  this is not that level of crowds. I definitely believe in the Disney crowd limit,  but I think the biggest issue is the lack of options for the reduced crowds. Everyone is  trying to do all the same experiences or eat at the limited number of open food spots at the same time. This definitely creates bottlenecks in walkways and creates long jams in lines for rides, Here are some rides and shows that are temporarily or permanently closed:

  • Animal Kingdom – Primeval Whirl – Permanently Closed, Rivers of Light – Permanently Ended
  • Magic Kingdom – Stitch’s Great Escape – Permanently Closed; Tom Sawyer Island, Tomorrowland People Mover, Liberty Square Riverboat, Disney World Railroad – Reopening hopefully Late 2021
  •  EPCOT- IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure – Permanently Ended
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away (stage show) – Permanently Ended

Some Disney Show Closures

  • Magic Kingdom – Happily Ever After, Festival of Fantasy Parade, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Enchanted Tales with Belle
  • Animal Kingdom – Finding Nemo: The Musical, Festival of the Lion King
  • Epcot – Epcot Forever
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Jedi Training Academy, Fantasmic,  Star Wars Launch Bay, Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage, Star Wars: Galactic Spectacular

Set Up Some Rules Ahead of Your Trip

Now that you have familiarized yourself with the changes to Disney World, I suggest that you set up some rules specifically for your family. We set up some basic rules beforehand, and we all agreed to be bound by those rules. That way we did not let the excitement of being back in Disney overrule our preparations. Our first rule was we would not go to parks on back to back days. With Disney’s new reservation system, you  have to book a reservation to visit a park. Remember, no park hopping allowed, only one park per day. By breaking up our park sessions we felt it would’ve given us time To reflect on what we thought and how we felt each day. Second rule and probably the most important rule, we decided that If we felt the park was too crowded the moment we walked in or any point after that we were going to leave no matter what. The only exception was, if we were in line for the new Star Wars ride Rise of the Resistance.

Make a Plan and Be Flexible.

We decided the first park we would hit would be Hollywood Studios. We visited the new Star Wars Land last fall but we were unable to get a boarding pass for the Rise of the Resistance, Disney’s new Star Wars ride. That’s the hottest and the hardest ticket to get. In order to even qualify to get a boarding pass for Rise of Resistance, you have to be inside the park before opening and have your party set up on the My Disney App experience. At 10 AM they release the first set of boarding passes. Typically all the passes are gone for that day within the first 60 seconds. I am a huge Star Wars fan so is my son KJ, our mission was to get a boarding pass. Our park visit was set up on Monday, thinking it would be a less crowded day that would give us the best chance to try to accomplish our goal. So we arrived at Hollywood Studios, and got in the line for the new Mickey and Minnie ride.

Loved the new Mackey ride!

The wait time was posted as a 65 minute wait which was fine because we were focused on trying to get the boarding passes, and we were not alone in our quest. It seemed as though everyone in line were doing the same countdown to 10 AM. Announcements came over the loudspeaker reminding guests about the upcoming boarding pass drop. I had everything loaded up on the My Disney App and starting at 9:59, every 15 seconds I began to refresh the app. ! was waiting for the app to tell me that I could seek a boarding pass. At 10:00 AM, The rise of resistance boarding passes became available on the My Disney App and we were lucky enough to get boarding pass group number 45. In what seemed like a few seconds…poof … all the passes were gone.

We got a boarding pass!!

The group in front of us were not able to get a boarding pass but the group behind us were. All you had to do was listen, and you could hear the exhilaration for those who successfully acquired a boarding pass and the frustration of those who didn’t. First mission accomplished!

Inside The Rise of the Resistance

Stay Informed – Stay Safe

Things at Disney are not just changing weekly but sometimes daily. Keep up with the latest news and information about Disney World. Disney is adjusting hours of operation weekly and expects the holiday hours to be adjusted.

If I had to rate Disney’s execution of safety protocols, I would give it a 9 out of 10. Everything and everywhere you go was clearly marked. There are plenty of hand sanitizer stations and or even wash up sinks to wash your hands. There are signs everywhere that talk about social distancing, mask wearing and keeping your hands clean.

Safety first…

They even make announcements while you’re walking to the park. The following stuck with me as we were actually leaving Epcot. There was a couple walking out in front of us. The husband removed his mask and the wife told him he should keep it on. Now we can debate whether he should or shouldn’t, but as he approached the trim area where there was a cast member who made it clear to him and anyone else that while on Disney property he had to keep his mask on and I’m glad to say he complied. That attention to detail while reinforcing the rules as people are walking out into the parking lot definitely made us feel just a little bit safer.

Peeking in on The Food and Wine Festival

Our second park visit was Epcot, definitely my wife’s favorite, particularly during the food and wine festival. Like all the other Disney parks, Epcot is going through a lot of construction right now and they have many rides and experiences shut down. We were a little bit disappointed that some of the food carts were not operating during the week but it did not deter my foodie wife,

It was sooo goooood…..

she found two great selections to try and I even stumbled across food at the NFL booth. Everything we tried we thoroughly enjoyed, the food was fantastic.

Visiting Disney Springs

For our last stop, we decided to head over to Disney Springs. We hadn’t been there in a while and figured it would be a great place to grab a bite to eat. So we made a calculated decision, we didn’t wanna have to deal with a large lunch or dinner crowd, so we decided to go late afternoon around 2 o’clock, kind of grab a really late lunch or early dinner.

We were actually pleasantly surprised at the size of the crowd. It was a beautiful day in Orlando, it was kind of windy and about 78°. The perfect temperature for walking around and enjoying all that Disney Springs has to offer. The same safety protocols were in place as the other Disney parks.  We had to pass a temperature check before we entered Disney Springs. Our boys were dying to go check out the Lego store so we headed there first.

Inside the Lego store

Lego was limiting the number of people allowed to be inside the store at one time, which was very nice to see. We ended up settling on an outdoor eating place, grabbing a few Blaze Pizzas and a burger via mobile ordering.

Pizza time!!

For dessert, we treated the boys to Sprinkles cupcakes. The Disney Springs was definitely a win.

So many choices….

Recap – Will We Come Back for Christmas?

When we got back to the RV on our final day, we wanted to decompress and talk about our experience in Disney. So here are our thoughts. With the upcoming holiday season we fully expect the crowds to be much larger than when we visited in October.

There’s a high demand out there for people with a desire to just kick back and enjoy themselves after we’ve all had to deal with the stress of Covid and how it’s disrupting our lives. We actually have plans as always to be in Disney for Christmas and New Year’s. We have Park reservations already set up.

New Year’s 2020 in Epcot..

The question that we keep asking ourselves is the question you need to ask yourself. Is it worth it? That’s a very personal decision, very much based on how you have lived your life in this year of Covid. Our family has been very careful with where we have  gone and who we’ve been around.

We will miss this place..

So as it stands today, if I was a betting man, I would say we will not be enjoying the Disney parks for Christmas and New Year’s. If we’re so inclined to scratch that Disney itch, we might do it a few weeks after Christmas with smaller crowds.
