We know we have been pretty quiet lately on our blog. It’s not because we wanted to neglect our blog, it’s because we have been so busy doing videos, projects, creating content for other RV platforms and blogs. One of those projects we had to keep secret, that is until a few days ago..
Now we can let the world know that we were invited to be one of 5 RV influencers to participate in the 1st Great American Cook-Off sponsored by Camping World.
When we got invited to compete, I was excited, but nervous. Surprised that a former NFL player who’s played on National TV more times than I could count would be nervous about being in a cooking/grilling competition? I fancy myself as a solid backyard cook, who knows his way around a grill, but I worried if judges would like any of the things I have confidence to cook. I knew I would have to challenge myself, and I looked forward to taking a few chances. I don’t know about you, but I’m in this to win this. I didn’t fly coast to coast, just to coast.
This event is so special for a few reasons…..
1. it’s a real competition! Yes, I’m doing all my own grilling and cooking. No help with receipes, no help from a behind the scenes chef, and in my case, no wife to help. Tia was nervous about both of us getting on a plane and potentially exposing ourselves to Covid. We both are vaccinated, but with a son that was born with only one working kidney, we have been ultra careful of unnecessary potential exposure.
2. We have to plan our own meals ( a breakfast, lunch and dinner). We made our own shopping lists and got to shop for our own ingredients.
3. The prizes are geared not for us, but for you! If I win, you really win.

Cuz Ive never been in a grilling or cooking competition I figured l be anding in the top 3 in this competition would be a solid goal.

Rules to cook by…
The rules were simple;
- Make a breakfast, a lunch and dinner. CW would take us shopping one time to get whatever we needed.
- No one would be given help with recipes, we were totally on our own.
- Everything we cooked had to be prepared using items sold by Camping World.
- Our dishes would be judged by 3 well respected people in the culinary world. Actually 2, if you don’t count Ian, whose claim to fame is he likes to eat!
- For each meal would have a certain amount of time to cook( 45 minutes for lunch ) and present our plated dishes to the judges.
- Dishes would be ranked from 5th place (no points) to 1st.

Results from episode one – I made my famously delicious Brioche French toast with thick bacon, hot organic maple syrup, and a fresh and frozen fruit with kale smoothie on the side. I ended up in a respectable third place sitting with 200 points. While I’m disappointed and want to be higher. I feel like I’m in a perfect position to climb the leaderboard next week when lunch is what’s on the menu.
